Geylang’s Hidden Gems

People know Geylang as the red light district in Singapore. Many assume that there is not much to do in the area. However, did you know that the red light district is only found in Lorong 8 to 18? There are so many things to do in the area such as shop, eat, and the like. Here’s a list of things to do in Geylang:

 

1. Tanjong Rhu Pau and Confectionery

Address: 351 Geylang Road, Singapore 389372

The restaurant serves a variety of paus/buns, pastries, tarts, dimsum, and the like. They however, are famous for their paus which is freshly baked everyday. Locals recommend the char siew pau which is known as barbecued pork buns to many. The filling consists of shredded pork pieces coated in a sweet and savory rich sauce. In addition to this, their big pork paus which is filled with a generous amount of moist pork along with a sliced egg is also a favorite.  Should customers opt for take-out, these buns are packed in boxes. This is perfect for tourists who would like to bring home some to their families.

 

 

 

2. FairPrice Grocery

The quaint grocery is just a 5 minute walk from the apartment which is really convenient for guests who need something in the wee hours of the morning. It may not be as big as other groceries however they sell all the basic necessities.

 

 

 

3. Ken Wah Sung Coffee Shop

This coffee shop is a favorite among locals especially during breakfast. Their breakfast set includes kaya toast—a Singaporean breakfast staple made out of sliced white bread with a coconut, sugar, and butter filling. The set comes with a soft boiled egg and a drink. The price ranges from 3 to 4 SGD which is really affordable. Aside from kaya toast, another popular breakfast dish is the “economy fried bee hoon-mee.” This is basically their version of stir fried noodles. It comes with sunny side up eggs and luncheon meat.

 

 

4. Paya Lebar Square Mall

The mall consists of a lot of restaurants such as the famous Toast Box which is found in a lot of areas in Singapore. However, this branch is the closest to the apartment. The famous fastfood chain in the Philippines, Jollibee is also located there as well. Jollibee is known for its fried chicken which is described by Filipinos as “crispylicious and juicylicious.” The mall also houses Giant Supermarket which is obviously more complete than the aforementioned Fairprice supermarket.

 

 

 

5. Singpost Centre

Guests who want to workout can go to this mall because it has a gym. This is the closest gym to the apartment. Aside from this, the famous American fastfood chain, Carls Jr. which is known for its charbroiled burgers can be found there as well. What makes this mall interesting is the food court called, Ministry of Food that offers different types of cuisine. What’s cool about this place is that you can skip the long lines and order through their website, http://socialsquare.ministryoffood.com.sg  Everything is high tech because aside from their website, each stall has a screen that customers use to place an order. Some of their famous dishes include the beef loin from Smokehouse and signature Kaisendon from Kaisentei.

 

 

 

6. Claypot Restaurant

Just down the street, another famous restaurant can be found. Listed in the 2016 Singapore Michelin guide, this is another favorite of both tourists and locals. Their popular dish is their claypot rice which consists of a generous amount of rice topped with chicken, salted fish, pork belly, and vegetables—definitely a feast once devoured. Aside from this, they also serve other dishes such as pork ribs, pumpkin crayfish, fruity prawns, and etc.

 

 

7. J.B. Ah Meng Kitchen

3-4 minute walk from Ace Residences Sims Avenue

 

This restaurant is part of the 2016 Singapore Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand list. The cuisine they serve is a combination of Malaysian and Chinese. Their salted egg prawn ball dish is a must try. It is made out of deep fried battered prawns coated in a salted egg yolk sauce. Some of their dishes are really spicy especially their signature dish, curry fish head.  It leaves an after taste and may take a while before the spiciness subsides. Their servings are huge. In fact, their small dishes can feed up to three people.

 

 

8. Penang Seafood

13 minute walk from the apartment

 

This restaurant serves authentic Penang dishes. One of their signature dishes is the salted egg sotong which is basically deep fried battered squid coated in a thick and creamy salted egg sauce. In addition, people also recommend their Penang laksa and lala hokkien mee—a noodle dish.
